Work Clothes/ Play Clothes
Here’s what I wore to work and to play in May.

Play Clothes.
I wore this to church and it felt light and feminine. I have a little story about these shoes. A sweet online friend sent me an email one day and asked if I might be interested in a pair of beautiful shoes she had sitting in her closet. She had loved them, and bought them on a whim, but they had sat in her closet for some time with very little wear. She thought they looked like my style and wondered if I might be interested in them. They are a creamy, light, yellow color which can be a little challenging to pair up, but man oh man are they stunning shoes. I have made an effort to wear them regularly and build outfits around them to do justice to the generous gift she sent my way. Every time I wear them, I think about Justine and try to show these pretty shoes a little adventure in her honor!

Skirt: Down East Basics
Shoes: Minna Parikka

I’ve fallen in love with these little turquoise kitten heels from Seychelles. Despite their vibrant color, I’ve taken to wear them like a neutral. I’ve worn them with a coral dress, a yellow skirt (pictured here) and plenty of other outfits that include color or bold prints. They’re unexpected and fun… and the short heel height makes them great for chasing the kids or walking to a lunch meeting downtown.

Work Clothes AND Play Clothes
I had to go in the office this day, but this was a special one because it was also Everly’s Mothers Day tea party at school. She picked out my shoes and I chose the top and skirt to go with it. This outfit is a little playful and quirky, and I felt great in it.

Play Clothes
Hellooooo weekend! The only real chance I get to wear shorts is on the weekend, so I take full advantage. This was a day for running errands and a family cookout, so I need something comfortable and put together.

Work Clothes.
I think this is my favorite outfit of the bunch. This mint color is one of my favorites to wear because I think it compliments my pale skin. I’m also happy to report that I FINALLY got my hair done a few days after this photo was taken - it looks like I was trying to go for the ombre look the old fashion way with that root grow out - yikes!!
Blouse: Collective Concepts (via Stitch Fix)
Skirt: Tobi.com
Belt: Vintage
Shoes: Steven
Arlo wears:
Shirt: NextDirect.com
Pants: Carters
Always his best accessory: Those killer strawberry blonde curls!
I always have fun with these posts and it’s fun to pick out a few of my favorite outfits from the month to feature on the blog. One day I’ll have to do a post of all of the outfit that have never made the cut- there are some REALLY bad ones in the mix! That post should be titled “What Was I Thinking When I Wore This to Work or To Play?” I definitely have my share of fashion missteps - but the older I get, the more I feel like I’m beginning to hone in on my specific style. One thing is for sure, I sure do love a pretty skirt and a fun pair of shoes.

Work Clothes/Play Clothes

This Work Clothes/Play Clothes is a little different than my usual. This time, my friends at Tieks by Gavrieli challenged me to wear their amazing leather flats every day for an entire week (best challenge I’ve ever been given, that’s for sure). I’m definitely a high heels girl, but these soft little shoes have been turning me into a major fan of flats. I’ve talked about my love of Tieks before, but since I’ve started wearing them constantly, the thing that amuses me most is how many other women are as obsessed with them as I am. I have had women stop me in airports, around town and in the office to say, “Oh my gosh. Are those Tieks? Aren’t they amazing?” I have many conversations about them with other women who have spotted their trademark aqua blue soles and wanted to gush over how comfortable they are.
Here is what I wore to work and to play during my Week of Tieks:

Sunday: Play Clothes.
This was a gorgeous day in Raleigh. We went vintage shopping and ate lunch outside on the patio of one of my favorite places downtown. It was still a bit cool, so I kept my sleeves and skirt long, but this was one of the first real “warmer” days that preluded spring.
Top: Target
Skirt: StitchFix
Bracelet: Vintage
Shoes: Cardinal Red Tieks

Monday: Work Clothes.
A quick Monday morning outfit. I was in the mood for jeans and a tshirt but I tried to dress it up a bit for the office by adding the jacket, scarf and the sparkle from my shoes. Super comfortable, but pulled together enough for a day full of planning meetings.
Jacket: Forever21
Tshirt: American Apparel
Scarf: Zulily
Jeans: Kensie
Shoes: Starstruck Tieks

Tuesday: Work Clothes
I got this blouse at Forever21 last month and I love the length and the cut of it. It was pretty on its own, but I always love color, so I paired it with a sunny scarf and red lips.
Top: Forever21
Jeans: Kensie polka dot
Shoes: Starstruck Tieks

Wednesday: Work/Play Clothes
I worked from home on this day, so while I was technically working, this outfit played double duty as a play outfit since we had evening plans with friends. This is the second fashion outfit in a month where I’ve looked back at a photo and thought…whoa that dress is a lot shorter than I remember. I think the cold hard truth that I’ve finally aged out of most of my mini dresses has hit. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.
Cardigan: c/o Francesca’s Collections
Dress: Vintage
Tights: Target
Shoes: Starstruck Tieks

Thursday: Work Clothes
hahahah. Oh, this pose! I’m rolling my eyes at myself as I type this. This is standard work attire for me - A pretty blouse, a blazer and a pair of skinny jeans. Most of the time I would pair this with a pair of heels, but I was more than happy to swap them out for my trusty Tieks.
Blazer: Stitch Fix
Blouse: Stella and Dot
Belt: Forever21
Jeans: Levi Strauss
Shoes: Starstruck Tieks

Friday: Work Clothes
I loved this outfit. I felt feminine and put together and the warmer temps meant bare legs! I talk about this belt every so often, but my Godmother gave me this buckle that once belonged to her grandmother. I absolutely cherish it and love how it instantly adds character to whatever I am wearing.
Top: StitchFix
Skirt: Asos.com
Belt: Vintage
Shoes: Starstruck Tieks

Saturday: Play Clothes
Hooray hooray! Shorts weather! Most of this day was spent playing with the kids and running errands. I decided to forgo makeup and was lucky enough to get a second day out of my curls (I love when that happens). I wanted something casual cool and this outfit did the trick. I would wear this lightweight, terry blazer every day if I could.
Blazer: Tart
Tshirt: American Apparel
Shorts: Sanctuary
Belt: Forever21
Shoes: Cardinal Red Tieks
It was fun to give myself the challenge to wear the same shoes every day for a week. Even though I documented these outfits several weeks ago, I find myself wearing Tieks 3 or 4 times a week now. There is a reason these shoes made Oprah’s Favorite things list, and why every woman I know who owns a pair is gaga over them too. They’re fun to wear, go with everything, and are so incredibly comfortable. I’m a Tieks girl for life now.
Love,
M
The Tieks featured in this post were gifted to me by the company. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Work Clothes/Play Clothes
Here are some things I wore to work and to play in February and March.

Work Clothes.
This was a bit of weird color combo, but I liked the neutrals against the bright blues. It was comfortable and flowy for a day when we had a big women’s leadership event at work.
Top: (Cardigan turned around backwards) H&M
Skirt: StitchFix
Belt: Calvin Klein
Shoes: Target

Work Clothes.
I keep talking about them - but I’m obsessed with these crop trousers from Target. They have had them in a rainbow of colors over the months and are priced right around $25 a pop. They wash and dry easily and are perfect for work. I pick them up every time I see a new color and they have become a staple in my work wardrobe.

Jean Jacket: Target
Scarf: Zara kids
Skirt: American Apparel
Tights: Gap kids
Shoes: Jelly Beans

Play clothes.
Hello winter pale legs! The combination of spring weather + a quick dinner alone with Brent had me itching to wear something fun. Jeans and a comfy top would have been just fine, but I was looking for an excuse to wear something outside the scope of my day to day wardrobe. Any chance to dress up a bit! Looking at it now, I think this dress is just a wee bit short for me, but I felt good in it anyway.
And these heels…. oh how I am in love. These two-tone beauties have already been designated my favorite statement heels for spring. I also love that they are so reasonably priced ($62.00) for such a stand out shoe.

Dress: H&M
Necklace: Fab’rik
Shoes: c/o Minx Boutique

Play Clothes.
This weekend outfit was for running a few errands (in my comfy swedish clogs) and playing in the yard (barefoot). After a week of everyone being sick and wearing yoga pants, I wanted to put on something bright and cheery.
These Kensie jeans were in my last Stitch Fix and I absolutely love them. I have worn them constantly and I love the fit and cut. I originally put this outfit together without the chambray top underneath, but it felt a little too belly-revealing to run errands in so I added an extra layer.

Ha ha ha. I can’t stop laughing at this photo. Brent snapped a couple of shots for this outfit and while there were several without her hand in my face, this one is still my favorite. She recently picked up the “Mama, smell my hand” routine and most often we say, “No thank you. I would prefer not to.” but she still insists on it anyway. Typically she wants us to smell the hand soap she just used or that they smell like oranges from her lunch - but with a toddler you just NEVER KNOW where those hands have been and smelling them is a risk I’m not always willing to take! Ok, totally sidetracked - but that’s what she is doing in this photo and it makes me giggle to think about.

February and early March have been kind of all over the place weather wise - some nice mild days and some colder temps too. I’m eager to start wearing more more short sleeves and sleeveless tops and bare legs. I love spring and the fashion changes it brings with it!

Work Clothes/Play Clothes
Gotta squeeze in a fashion post before the end of the month. Here are some things I wore to work and to play:

Work Clothes.
I’m all kinds of in love with this black blazer. I’ve worn it constantly lately and I love the leather trim on the lapel. It also has a really cute accordian pleat detail in the back.
Blazer: Line and Dot
Top: Collective Concepts
Leggings: Stitch Fix
Shoes: c/o Minx Boutique
Everly is wearing:
Blazer: Target
Dress: Old Navy
Tights: Target
Shoes: Zulily

Play Clothes.
I wore this on a pretty Sunday when the temps were in the 70s and I couldn’t wait to just enjoy bare legs. We were headed to a birthday party, but afterwards I made a run to the grocery store. Two different women stopped me and told me how much they loved my outfit. It made me feel so great that I couldn’t stop smiling. This skirt is actually two layered together - a pretty soft pink one and a vintage crinoline underneath.
Top: Target
Pink Skirt: DownEast Basics
White crinoline: vintage
Shoes: Steven

Play Clothes.
I didn’t snap a photo of this outfit on our big camera, so this slightly grainy one from my instagram feed will have to do. I bought these wedge sneakers on a whim last fall because I thought they were fun. Whenever I wear them, I try to keep the rest of my outfit pretty neutral because they carry an outfit on their own with their bright pink and red design. This was a fun Sunday that included brunch at a favorite neighborhood spot and a visit to the partk

I went with Brent to see him play a show outside Charlotte. I always like to play with soft & edgy combinations and this outfit is a good example of that. I originally wore this short sleeved dress to the rehearsal dinner of one of my best friend’s weddings last fall and haven’t put it on since. It’s too pretty to be sitting in my closet until spring!

Colors, patterns and red lips! We did some adventuring last weekend and happened upon a neat little collection of vintage and antique shops. It was closed when we went, but we plan to go back this week to check it out again.

So there you go- Some outfits I wore in January. There is usually at least one outfit I’m iffy about, but I actually like all of these looks this month. A couple feminine looks, some playful and a lots of color. While comparing them all for this post - it got me thinking that I’m not certain I could define my personal style. Romantic? Classic? Sporty? I think I’m all over the place!

Work Clothes/ Play Clothes
Look at me, busting out with two fashion posts in a month! Sometimes finding time for my five minute fashion shoots on the front porch is easier than I think. Bless my dear husband for his willingness to snap these, even though he has me convinced that the neighbors are making fun of me for doing it. “Look honey, that strange lady across the street is pretending to be a model again.”

Play Clothes.
Can’t stop laughing at my hands crammed in these tiny cardigan pockets. Did I walk around like this all day? I can’t be sure, but I sincerely hope not. This was a weekend outfit, I can’t remember where we were headed but considering I picked out this ensemble, it must have been somewhere other than the grocery store or Target.

We’ve had a lot of temperate days this winter where it’s felt very fall like. I’ve taken advantage of it by extending my wear of three quarter length tops and exposed feet. I like this look. It’s a little matchy, but I felt put together in it.

Yeahhh. Got my partner in crime in this photo. (also, look at my dog Gibson getting in on the action!) I don’t know about these boots. In hindsight, I wish I would have chosen different shoes.

I don’t know why, but this pink/yellow combo still felt Christmasy to me. I wore this out to brunch and then we headed to a holiday gathering with my dad’s side of the family. It was another mild day by NC winter standards - 59*F, but for an extra layer, I wore knee length leggings underneath this midi skirt. I just wasn’t in the mood for tights.
Sweater: Target
Scarf: a gift
Skirt: asos.com
Belt: vintage
Shoes: BC Shoes (minx boutique last season)

Play Clothes.
Ok, just ignore everything else and look at these gorgeous tights…err…hose… thingies. I love them. LOVE love love them. This was Christmas day. Attempted to brush the frizzes out of my hair, slapped on some mascara and we were headed over to our best friend’s house. I kept wishing I had black booties to complete this look, but just tossed my brown ones on instead because I felt heels would be too dressy and flats weren’t funky enough to keep up with these tights. Also, I got this comfy little skater dress recently and I find myself wearing it a lot. Super versatile for dressing up or down (and I mean DOWN down - I’ve worn it as pajamas a few times!)

Work Clothes/Play Clothes
Here’s what I wore to work and to play.

Play Clothes.
This is comfy weekend wear for me. And I want to take the time talk about my shoes for a minute. I struggle to promote expensive things on my blog because if I can’t justify buying something myself, I’m not going to get on here and tell you that you should. Tieks reached out to me recently and very kindly offered to send me a pair of their famous leather flats. They didn’t do it in exchange for a review or even a guarantee that I would mention them on my blog. When I browsed their site, the price of these shoes made me go… WHOA! That’s a whole lot of money for a pair of little slip on shoes. I thought to myself, ” I’ve got several pairs of flats, what makes these pricey ones so special?” Then they arrived, I put them on my feet and they were so comfortable I didn’t even want to take them off to go to bed that night. I have walked and walked and walked in these shoes. They are officially my air travel shoes. My chasing toddler shoes. My go anywhere shoes. They are classic, go with everything and make my feet so happy. I am telling you all of this because I know in confidence that I will be purchasing another pair when I wear these out one day. The average cost per wear on these bad boys is going to be pennies by the time I get through with them. Another bonus: I learned on their site that Tieks supports one of my favorite charities, Kiva, and to date has donated almost $400,000 to provide microloans to people in developing countries.
Sweater: BB Dakota
Striped shirt: Forever21
Pants: Target
Shoes: c/o Tieks

Work Clothes.
Whew. This photo is proof that I was in MAJOR need of some hair attention. and maybe a nap. (Status update: I got both! Keep reading for proof) I feel like this outfit has some sort of British countryside horseback thing going on. These boots are my wannabe Frye boots. I found them on ebay for $45 and they were the score of the century. Someone else did all the work of breaking them in and I get all the fun of pretending I’m headed out for a trail ride.
Blazer: Ark & Co (find it in black here)
Shirt: Stitch Fix (I can’t remember the brand right now)
Jeans: Big Star
Boots: Vintage

Work Clothes.
See! New hair (a warmer, medium blonde) - and props to Brent for getting up with the kids at 7am so often lately. Those extra thirty minutes in bed every morning have been a gift! This is my favorite outfit of the bunch. I just felt really fun all day with these bright boots and this gorgeous cowl.
Cosby Cowl: c/o Minx Boutique available here (and handmade by a local designer)
Blazer: Ark & Co (P.S. I love this brand)
White top: BB Dakota
Pants: Sanctuary
Boots: Dolce Vita (on major sale via Zulily)

Play Clothes.
A WCPC tradition: Baby on the hip and my beast of a cat in the photo! We were headed to an early Thanksgiving with my dad’s side of the family.
Yellow sweater: forever21
Blouse: Line and Dot
Belt: Vintage
Jeans: H&M
Shoes: Steven

Work Clothes.
This isn’t the most flattering picture of me, but Arlo is too cute so I had to include it. I had lots of greens and oranges and creams going on this day. More shoe love! I’ve seen the flat slipper version of these shoes all over, but I love that these have an unexpected wedge heel.
Coat: Asos
Cream blouse: Stitch Fix
Floral blouse: Forever21
Necklace: vestique
Jeans: Levis
Shoes: c/o Minx Boutique and available here.

Work Clothes.
You know how every fall when it starts to get cold, you’re like “YAY! I love cold weather!” and then by February you are like “Brrr. When the heck is spring going to get here? I’m over it” I go through this exact same thing with my love/hate relationship of tights. Every fall I can’t wait to wear them and by late winter I would give anything to sport bare legs again. The love phase has just launched this season, so expect to see a whole lot of tights wearing outfits in the coming months! And I kind of felt like a ballerina in this outfit.
Cardigan: H&M
Dress: c/o ModCloth
Tights: Target
Boots: MIA Nanette
That’s all the fashion blogging I can muster for a few weeks but I have to admit I always have fun with these posts. Thanks for indulging me!

Work Clothes/Play Clothes
Cold weather is here and I’m loving all the layers! Here are some of my favorite looks from the past few weeks:

Play Clothes.
I wore this while we were visiting my mom last weekend. We planned a little adventure to a local farm and this outfit seemed easy and comfortable. I’m actually not a huge fan of poncho-like tops, but this one in my last Stitch Fix box won me over. I paired it with some of my favorite high waisted, wide leg denim. I bought them from a small, local clothing company in Hayes Valley when we lived in San Francisco and only recently rediscovered them (along with a few other of my favorite clothing pieces) in a box in our basement.
Poncho: tulle
Jeans: lemon twist
Boots: vintage

Work Clothes.
I put this outfit together for work on the day our company hosts an annual Halloween festival for all of the children of employees. I knew my kids would be visiting that afternoon for carnival games and office trick or treating and I wanted something that felt festive. I’m a bit obsessed with this pretty burnt orange top. The back has a tuxedo tails shape and a sheer panel that makes it really interesting (I wore a tank underneath to keep it office friendly!)
Top: Minx
Pants: Target
Wedge heels: Zulily
Scarf: GAP

Work Clothes.
This is my favorite kind of fall outfit. A pretty patterned blouse, a fun blazer and my favorite jeans. I felt feminine and put together in this even if it looks like I’m missing a few fingers in this photos.
Blazer: Ark & co (The black version is available via Minx Boutique, here)
Blouse: Forever21
Jeans: H&M Second Sqin
Belt: An old wardrobe staple
Heels: Steven

Work Clothes.
Oh hey, that’s a real neat pose you’ve got going on there. (And this was the best picture I had of this outfit- yikes!) I was in a long skirt mood on this morning but I’ve felt challenged to find the perfect closed toe shoes to wear with them. You can’t see them here, but I’m wearing tan ankle boots and I think they looked cute. I’ve decided ankle boots go with pretty much everything, especially long skirts.
Top: Forever21
Skirt: Stitch Fix
Belt: Forever21
Boots: c/o Wanted Shoes

Play Clothes.
The face I’m making here keeps making me laugh. I promise I don’t take myself as seriously as I appear to be doing here. We were headed into downtown Asheville for a little shopping and visiting with friends and it was a cool, crisp day. I live in oversize sweater pieces during the cold months and this chunky, sleeveless piece is one of my favorites. You can’t see the detail here, but these leggings have a faux leather stripe down the sides. I really like that small, funky detail.
Sweater: pink martini
Striped top: H&M
Leggings: Stitch Fix
Boots: Vintage
So now that I’m finishing out this WCPC post, it’s become painfully obvious to me that I need some fashion blogger inspired pose lessons. Despite doing these type of posts for years now, I still find myself with plenty of photos that include scary hands, awkward posing and smug faces. Now that I look back on these pics, I think the my glaring mistake was that I didn’t stick with what I know in fashion posts - a baby on my hip or holding my hand.
Also, I’m getting the itch to do something with my hair again. My hairstylist is on maternity leave and I haven’t felt brave enough to go to anyone else. My roots and ends are really desperate for attention so I think I’m going to have to make it happen soon. I think I want to dye my hair a warm brown. Maybe I’ll take a little length off. The change of seasons always gives me the itch to change things up.
I love this time of year… but I especially love the clothes. Layers and scarves and boots, oh my!
Love,
M

Work Clothes/ Play Clothes
Happy Monday friends! Back, back, back again… with one of my few and far between fashion posts! Let’s just jump right in, shall we?

Play Clothes. Let me tell you, I felt really good in this outfit. We were heading out to a concert with friends and I wanted something that would be comfortable on a hot summer evening. I paired it with a simple tank and a funky necklace I picked up at a local boutique. Please run (don’t walk!) over to Asos.com to pick this skirt up (it comes in three colors!). It’s the perfect weight and length, and feels incredibly feminine and flirty on. I have to force myself not to wear it weekly.
Skirt: Asos.com
Tank: Target
Arrow necklace: Fab’rik
Shoes: Restricted Footwear

Work Clothes.
Doing a little decade mixing here with my ‘60’s cateye frames and my 1970’s shirt dress. I really love this vintage dress. I bought it off etsy without really paying much mind to the measurements. I just eyeballed the model wearing it and thought she looked sort of my size. It wasn’t until 6 months after buying it that my breastfeeding boobs finally calmed down enough that I was able to squeeze into it. Let me tell you - there is NO room to spare in this bad boy. Every time I wear it, at least once, the little belt will pop off my waist when the poor little snap clasp can no longer take it. Despite that, I plan to wear it until I split a seam somewhere.
Dress: Vintage
Shoes: Target
Cateye frames: Ray-ban

Work Clothes.
Blah. I don’t love this. I really love these ponti pants but looking back, pairing it with this top and a matchy necklace wasn’t the best choice. All I need is a some fly wires and a little pointy hat, and I’m ready to star in my community production of Peter Pan.
Top: c/o Francesca’s Collections
Belt: Vintage
Pants: StitchFix
Shoes: BC shoes

Play Clothes.
I look a little crazy (and SUPER pale) in this photo but I loved this outfit so it makes the post anyway. Brent and I went out with our neighbors last Thursday night to check out a cool all things art-music-design festival in downtown Raleigh. I really love the booties with dresses look and this pair from Wanted Shoes are a favorite. I love the suede/sparkle combo and it never fails that a girl will grab my arm and exclaim “Those shoes are killer!” every time I wear them out.
Dress: H&M
Necklace: Fab’rik
Booties: Dressage booties c/o Wanted Shoes

Play Clothes.
It’s not a Work Clothes/Play Clothes post without at least one baby on the hip photo! I wore this to church yesterday morning. There was a little bit of nip in the air and I took advantage of it with jeans and a sheer long sleeved blouse. I liked this look, but I want to wax poetic about these leopard print wedges for a minute. They debuted on WC/PC here last winter and I have worn them nearly every week since. I love that they add just enough fun to whatever I’m wearing. It hit me that I should probably invest in a second pair (I hope they are still available!) because I’m going to cry crocodile tears when I finally wear these bad boys out.
Top: StitchFix
Scarf: Darling
Belt: Vintage
Jeans: H&M Second Sqin
Wedges: Steven
Arlo’s outfit:
Top: (eek, I have no idea, I cut the itchy tag out - off zulily)
Overalls: Vintage health-tex
Shoes: Cientas kids
I’m excited about the next WC/PC post because I anticipate lots of boots and scarves and sweaters in my future. It’s the only medicine for a summer-loving girl’s heart this time of year.
Love,
M

Work Clothes/Play Clothes
Well guys, you are in for a fashion masterpiece with this post. Instead of inspiring backgrounds and model poses - I’m being visionary with hastily taken photos in a poorly lit parking garage and my kids popping in and out of the shots. I get about 2 minutes, a handful of times a month to try and capture my outfits, so I hope you enjoy the squinty eyes and awkward poses. Regardless, I really love this series because I always enjoy putting together outfits that make me feel good.
Here’s what I wore to work and to play.

Work Clothes. I’m always drawn to really feminine clothing. You slap a doilie or lace on something and I’m all “Ooooh! I want to wear that!”. This crochet top from Forever21 is about five years old and a consistent player in my closet.
Top: Forever21
Skirt: Down East Basics
Belt: Vintage
Shoes: Dollhouse

Play Clothes.
I know, I know - weird face, weird lighting. This wasn’t even supposed to be a WCPC outfit shot, but I actually really like the simplicity of this outfit so I’m throwing it in. You can’t really see them in this photo, but I’m wearing a pair of awesome neon yellow sandals. So fun! This is one of my favorite ways to get extra use out of a maxi dress. I love to wear a t-shirt over it and knot it on the side (80s style!) to give some definition to my waist. So comfortable and cute! (It would also look great on pregnant mamas too!)
Striped tshirt: Tshirt (that’s the brand name, confusing I know)
Maxi dress: Target
Neon sandals: Henry Ferrera
Bag: c/o Francesca’s Collections
Arlo’s Wearing:
Carter’s romper
Hand-me-down sneaks from his cousin Thomas

Work Clothes.
Grrr. I wish I had a better shot of this outfit. This was my favorite outfit last week. This dress has an amazing cut and this photo isn’t doing it justice. It’s made of jersey (i.e. super comfy) but it has a really modern cut and two little slits in the front that keep it ladylike but show just a slip of thigh now and then.

Preppy is not a word I use often to describe my style so I’m not sure where my head was when I threw this together. The cream belt sort of clashes with the white stripes in the skirt, but the skirt was a tad too big in the waist and I needed something to hold it up.

I’m just going to put this out there. I know I am a thirty one year old woman and probably too grown for this trendy little hat. With that said, it makes me feel happy and carefree when I wear it so who cares if I look slightly silly in it.

Ha! I know, these shots are getting more ridiculous aren’t they? Both of the kids were just too cute not to include this one. I don’t have too much to say about this outfit other than I was feeling a bit brave to show some tummy in my day-to-day attire. Do you think it is inappropriate for a mother of two to wear a belly revealing top? I felt good in this (the main reason to wear anything right?) but I am curious to hear what others think on the subject of age appropriateness in fashion. I bought the prettiest bralet that I’ve been wanting to wear out one hot summer night with a flowy skirt, but I keep questioning if I’ve aged out of being able to wear stuff like that. And if I can still get away with it now, when is the cut off? 35? 40? When my kids tell me I’m embarrassing them?

Work Clothes/Play Clothes
It’s been awhile since I did a fashion post. I love spring/summer fashion where bare shoulders and legs reign supreme so I really enjoy dressing for this time of year. Here are some things I’ve worn to work and to play.

Work Clothes.
BOOM POW! Lots of color going on in this outfit. This skirt is an old favorite. You can see how I wore it 8 months pregnant here. The details on this combo:
Cardigan: c/o Francesca’s Collections
Lace cami: Francesca’s Collections
Belt: Vintage
Skirt: Vintage
Shoes: Restricted Paula Wedges

Work Clothes.
Isn’t this dress so cheery? I love this shade of yellow. I took a photo of this outfit on Instagram (@withoutmelissa) and my friend Jaye asked if the print was hamsters. HAMSTERS!!! I am still laughing about it - I WISH it was a hamster print dress because then it would be perfect. But alas, it’s just an abstract floral print.
Cardigan: A thousand years old (I’ve had it at least 10 years!)
Dress: Tobi.com (but I saw a similar version at needsupply.com too)
Belt: A special family heirloom given to me by my Godmother, Kathy.
Shoes: Makemechic.com

Play Clothes.
Lazy day clothes! It’s not fancy but this outfit was super comfortable. These are the sorts of outfits that probably have no place in a fashion post, but since I’ve never claimed to be a fashion blogger, I figure I can get away with it. I cut an old pair of jeans into these shorts on the day I wore this.
Tshirt: Billabong
Jean shorts: self made
Scarf: Zulily.com
Shoes: MakeMeChic.com
Arlo’s Outfit:
Tank: NextDirect.com (comes in a 4 pack with other cute prints!)
Pants: Broken Tricycle

Play Clothes.
This is a standard combo for me during warm months. Tank + midi skirt. It always works and can be made work appropriate by adding a cardigan or a cap sleeved wrap. I always say I’m not much of a “pink” girl, but I really like it paired with nudes and neutrals.
Tank: J Crew
Skirt: Asos.com
Shoes: Restricted Paula Wedges
Arlo’s Outfit:
Romper: Mud Pie
Shoes: Hand me downs

Play Clothes and Work Clothes?
I wore this Sunday as I had to cut my weekend short and head out on a business trip to Connecticut. I always try to dress comfortably when I fly in case I find myself faced with an unexpected delay or a sprint across the airport from one flight to the next (happened to me in this outfit, actually!) The hat was just a nice distraction from the fact I needed to wash my hair. These jeans look a little extra snug in this shot and since they were straight out of the dryer, it looks like I needed to do a few more of those “stretch ‘em out” squats in my bedroom before posing. The green loafers have been getting a lot of wear because they are so comfortable and I love the pop of color.
Hat: c/o Francesca’s Collections
T shirt: By Tshirt (That’s the name of the maker. Weird, eh?)
Jeans: DKNY
Loafers: MakeMeChic.com
Sunglasses: Ray-Ban Clubmasters
So that’s what I’ve been wearing - lots of bright colors, stripes & florals. After 3 days stuck inside meeting rooms with artificial lighting, I’m looking forward to getting home, throwing on a breezy dress and spending some time outdoors. Also, I’ve got two weeks of vacation coming up at the end of June & first of July so I’m looking forward to featuring lots of play clothes in the near future!
Love,
M
