Songs to be Alive To.
Morningbird by Forest Sun.
And this… this is Arlo’s song. I put it on my birth playlist along with a couple dozen other beautiful songs, but when I met him, this one resonated most with me. It feels like it was written from my heart to his. We dance to this together around our living room. And I have every intention of taking that spin with him as often as I possibly can before he decides one day he’s too cool to do so. A song for Arlo. My darling boy. My Morningbird.

Songs to Be Alive To.
Good Friday by Elvis Perkins
Do you ever put your earphones in at public places and pretend that the music is your own soundtrack? I used to do that on the mornings I took the train from San Francisco to Mountain View. This song always reminds me of those moments, pretending to live in a slow motion long shot of my own morning commute. I put it on my birth playlist because there’s a calming memory associated with this song. It fills me up every time.

Sort Of by Ingrid Michaelson
Oh Ingrid! My birth play list was peppered heavily with her sweet voice and lovely songs. I first discovered her on CD Baby back before Brent and I were married and you would have thought I had found my soul in music form. I must have listened to her album Girls and Boys on repeat for days. I’ve had five years of her songs there to accompany me as I got married, moved to a new city, and became a mother twice over. She’s been a good companion.

Skeletons by Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
One of my favorite songs in the world. Seriously, top of the list. It just gets inside of me. I put it on my birth play list because it makes me feel really badass. That sounds silly to say but whenever I hear it I get a little bounce in my hips and sparks in my eyes and everything feels good and right for a little while. Perfect music to dig deep and birth a baby to (or just dance around your bedroom… I’ve done both)
