A New Year.
The last night of 2012. When we had five little ones under the age of three wrapped around our ankles. When Kirby and Georgiah came to celebrate with us all the way from Brooklyn. When we gladly passed on the babysitters and crowded bars and instead pushed back all the furniture and danced to Cyndi Lauper and Run DMC in our living room. When the mamas and the daddies talked around the table while the kids strung toys from one end of the house to the other. When the big girls asked to watch Dora in the bedroom with the door closed in an effort to keep out little brothers. When we learned that our modest bath tub does, in fact, hold five children and a dozen plus bath toys all at once. When we pretended it was midnight at 8:30pm and counted down and shouted HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! and all the children got to taste sparkling apple cider for the first time. When we had a moment at 10:30pm that we questioned if we were going to be able to stay awake until midnight. When our friends Sarah and Thor showed up to ring in the new year with us despite having landed just hours earlier from Mexico. When Georgiah and Everly woke up at midnight for the real countdown then promptly fell back asleep. When we all laughed at how much our NYE celebrations have changed over the years but how much fun they still remain. When we had people sleeping in nearly every room in our house and everything grew quiet and still. When I was the last one awake and I couldn’t stop smiling over how much we squeezed out of the last hours of 2012.
Happy New Year!
