This Place.

(photos from our walk yesterday evening - the pretty house in the photos is one I always admire)

We’ve spent one and a half springs, two summers, two falls, and one winter in this little neighborhood on the edge of downtown Raleigh. We’ve walked the crooked sidewalks more times than I can keep count. When Everly was just learning to walk, we would let her toddle down the shaded paths, both of our arms outstretched and ready to catch her should she lose her balance. When Arlo’s due date came and went, I walked and walked and walked every inch of this neighborhood trying to convince him it was time to come out.

Our little blue bungalow next to the train tracks has been the perfect homebase from which our family has grown. We’ve lived in every square inch of it and it has been good to us. On Monday I sent an email to our landlord, letting her know that we had just gone under contract on another little bungalow in a different neighborhood. “The house will be clean and ready for new tenants on January 1st” I said. My fingers hovered over the keyboard before pushing send. I am painfully sentimental about things at times, and the finality of leaving our blue bungalow felt heavy for a moment.

If everything goes as planned, we will be in our new home just days before Christmas. We feel so much anticipation and excitement for the next page in our story, the chapter where we paint the front door red and plant flowers in window boxes and snuggle up together in front of our very own fireplace… but in the time we have left, I am enjoying the beauty of the sweet neighborhood that first welcomed us back to North Carolina.

This is the place where Everly learned to walk and Arlo learned to laugh. And just like our flats in San Francisco that I think back on with such fondness, I will tuck our memories in the blue bungalow away too.

We Loved Here.

Growing the Good April Charity: The Theodore Mulhollan Walk Team for March of Dimes.

Hello. I'm Melissa.

Wife to a rock n roll, super dad named Brent.

We're the adventuring type. Go. do. See.
We hit the jackpot when we had our daughter, Everly Veda in January 2010.
She has my eyes, his lips and a San Francisco heart.

In May 2011, we welcomed Arlo Redding, the most magical little dude ever into our family. His presence has made our good thing, even better.

We like old stuff and keeping it simple.
We believe in love, family and a good pair of cowboy boots.

Brent sings songs.
I write words.
And these sweet babies make our world go round.

Welcome.
