Greetings from the closest thing I have to a home office. I’m working on top of a quilt on our bed that belonged to my great grandparents and looking forward to this evening as I’m getting an unexpected night out with the mister (hooray for parents!)
Brent and I just had a discussion about our current house. “The walls are closing in!” he said and I agree that I’ve done an unusual amount of daydreaming about closet space and cabinets and spacious attics.
We’ve found a house that would be perfect for our family, but it’s farther out from downtown than we had hoped - it means my commute would be longer and my opportunities to come home for lunch would be fewer. It also means that we’d lose the “walkability” that we love about our current neighborhood - but moving a little farther out also means a little more house and over half an acre of land (and getting chickens! and having lots of outdoor cookouts! and backyard camping in tents!)
So right now, we’re just trying to figure out what we want more - more land & home for our family to enjoy or more urban activities and mid-day facetime. (This land vs. location debate must be the most common of all home buying decisions) We know how lucky we are to even have such first world problems.
Despite the advice to not let this decision be an emotional one, I can’t help but walk through prospective homes and think “Where would we put our Christmas tree?” or “Wouldn’t the flow of this space be perfect for the children’s birthday parties?” Whatever home we finally decide on will be the one that is the foundation of most of my children’s fondest childhood memories. The place where they will hang their artwork on the fridge, mark their heights on the door frame, make friends with neighborhood children, learn to ride bikes and put on plays and enjoy all the beauty of their youth. Thinking of the fun we are going to have together in a home of our own makes me so incredibly happy - now we have some decisions to make!
Love,
M
